On the Tenth Anniversary…of a Double Liver Transplant
Being a physician, one often confronts the harsh reality of human disease. The daily encounter with this unalterable truth can lead to a sense of cynicism, a fortification of oneself for the inevitable end that awaits.
My religion and understanding has always taught me to appreciate that there is a better day coming and that there needs to be no fear. My human experience seems to ignore this understanding.
I found myself succumbing to this cynicism when my brother-in-law's initial liver transplant encountered difficulties and clotted off, three days after surgery. I prepared myself for the end, believing that survival or finding a timely second liver match was unheard of. And yet a second liver became available and was transplanted.
Little did I realize that there was a "big picture" in motion, a destiny that ultimately guides us all.
Fast forward ten years, and here I am, filled with immense gratitude for the gift of time, understanding, experience, growth, and knowledge that the grand scheme has bestowed upon my extended family. It's a realization that surpasses words, transcending the clinical realm and entering the domain of the miraculous, the blessed, and the grand scheme itself.
Language often fails at moments like this.
The journey has been one of profound pilgrimage, both for myself and for those around me. It's a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, the power of hope, and the unexpected twists and turns that life presents us with. In the face of cynicism, a beacon of hope emerged, serving as a reminder that there is always more to the story than what meets the eye.
So, here's to the next ten years, brimming with hope, love, and the unwavering belief in the grand scheme.
I am reminded that there is always a grand scheme at play, guiding us through the challenges and triumphs, the sorrows and joys. It's a scheme that we may not always comprehend, but one that we can learn to trust and embrace.
